Background
Alfred Health is the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne. It serves a local population of approximately 400,000 and provides services across the continuum of care through 7000 staff and a budget of $700m.
Alfred Health’s services are provided from three campuses: The Alfred; Caulfield Hospital; and, Sandringham Hospital, plus 12 other sites across inner south east Melbourne and also works in collaboration with a wide range of other community-based services.

The Role
The CEO is charged with the responsibility of ensuring the community within the catchment area of Alfred Health is provided with high quality, accessible health care services that are responsive to community needs, and that the organisation fulfils it strategic priorities as set out in the 2008-09 Statement of Priorities and plays its role in health system reform.
In particular, this role will require acuity with research and education, engagement of key stakeholders such as the DHS, clinicians and staff, strong command of financials, and a personal style that builds trust.
The CEO must provide outstanding management of a diverse and complex health network across a diverse and large geographical region. There exists a strong and experienced management team to support a new leader, but the new incumbent will require intellect, focus, relationship skills, credibility and judgement to deliver successfully.
The Ideal Candidate
Experience
- Demonstrated success in leading in a large and complex organisation, preferably in the health sector.
- Deep understanding of health services and service delivery objectives.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, secure and manage major capital projects.
- Demonstrated ability to establish an effective relationship with a Board of Directors
Skills
- Strategic thinking – Demonstrated ability to define and clearly communicate the vision and future strategy for the organisation and to ensure the vision is effectively translated into clear business goals and objectives.
- Resource and financial management – Demonstrated ability to think commercially and identify ways to manage growth and contain costs. Ability to plan, initiate and develop major capital projects such as hospital redevelopments.
- Problem solving - Displays sound, broad judgement and demonstrates the ability to bring new insights to the solution of complex problems and issues.
- Personal presence, integrity and intellect.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to represent Alfred Health at appropriate forums

Qualifications
Relevant tertiary qualifications are essential, preferably at postgraduate level. A Master of Health Administration or equivalent is desirable.
