The Role
The overarching purpose of the Director of General Surgery will be to provide clinical leadership in the implementation of the Southern Health General Surgery service plan across all sites; on a daily basis through patient care and on a strategic basis through planning future general surgery needs and models of care across Southern Health.
The Director of General Surgery reports to the Surgery Program Director and is responsible for overseeing up to 6 direct reports including:
- Upper Gastrointestinal/Hepatobiliary
- Endocrine
- Colorectal
- Breast
- Acute General Surgery
- Transplantation (currently with vascular)
Key Accountabilities
The Director of General Surgery will hold ultimate accountability for:
- Clinical services and operational management - reporting to Southern Health's Acute Services Executive Director through the Surgery Program Director.
- Professional, quality and safety matters - reporting to the Southern Health Executive Director Medical Services through the Surgery Program Director.
The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will:
- Registered or registrable as a medical practitioner in the state of Victoria
- Broad and substantial experience in all aspects of General Surgery, including patient care and teaching
- A high level of clinical competence in General Surgery
- Proven leadership qualities
- A capacity for executive administrative responsibilities, including financial management and clinical risk management
- Energy, vision and proven commitment to excellence in General Surgery, research and medical education
Remuneration
The remuneration for this position will be sufficient to attract, retain and motivate an outstanding candidate.
Location
The position will be based at Southern Health's main campus in Clayton (approximately 20km from the Melbourne CBD), with regular engagement at the other acute campuses in Moorabbin, Dandenong, Berwick and Cranbourne.
