Marking the Board’s Report Card - Evaluating the performance of a Board and contributions made by individual Directors can be a challenging process

Published in Company Director Journal, AICD, Vol 22, No 06, July 2006

This article indicates that many Boards fail to follow through on recommendations arising from these reviews.

No doubt, the benefits of regular Board, committee and Director performance evaluations are numerous and far reaching – provided the evaluation is executed effectively. Says Peter Kronborg, Chairman of Strategic Human Capital advisory firm OPPEUS: “A lot of people place a great deal of attention on performance evaluation as being the end play. In actual fact”, says Kronborg “the critical issue is not about conducting Board performance evaluations. It’s about developing proper governance initiatives. The review is but one step in that development process.”

OPPEUS has developed a series of tailored Board review and governance development processes. Some of these integrate the Leblanc Board Evaluation Diagnostic. Overall the important factors are the contribution and competence of the consultant as an independent reviewer coupled with the Boards’ readiness to make change in the spirit of continuous improvement.
